Alex Keren’s music is a thrilling tale of discovery that has resulted in a unique voice and style reflecting the diversity of musical, artistic and cultural influences, which he has made his own.
Born in Paris to a British mother and a Peruvian father. Alex Keren grew up between France and England in a thoroughly artistic and multicultural environment. His musical education began at age four when his older sister played him her LPs of The Beatles, George Benson and Bob Marley. Alex Keren points to his discovery of blues music, and particularly the music of Jimi Hendrix, when he was a teenager as the event that changed everything for him. Although he was already an accomplished drummer, he taught himself guitar and never let go of his instrument again since.
While it was his self-taught, electric renditions of Hendrix classics that wowed the crowds, Alex Keren was most attracted to composing and recording his own songs. His first studio consisted of two tape decks he would switch between to add additional layer of vocals, drums or guitar. These homemade recordings and numerous cellar jam sessions taught him the value of experimentation, blending musical styles and collaboration with other musicians.
In 1999 Alex Keren began playing at venues in Soho, Brixton and Camden with his band ‘Brothers on the Slide’ and collaborated on projects with a wide variety of artists, including the world-famous musicians and dancers from stage sensation Stomp. Having studied music and sound engineering at London Guildhall, Alex Keren began working as a producer, composer and sound engineer for other artists. His credits range from dance to R&B and world, and even to children’s music, with several international successes on SonyBMG and Warner Music.
In between sessions Alex Keren has been working enthusiastically on his own material, including songs that go back as far his two-tape-deck days.
The album reflects Alex Keren’s blues, soul, rock and reggae roots, all tied together by his distinct voice and the warm touch of his organic style. The powerful musical bond formed by his acoustic trio, with the introduction of instruments such as Indian harmonium, cello, Rhodes piano and horns, result in a hard-to-resist musical exploration of astonishing artistic coherence.
Alex Keren has appeared on radio and television. His unique sound and blending of musical styles make him an exciting and talented young artist to watch out for.
