Label Vote 2005 - Sep 9, 2005

Results of Label Vote 2005

picture The race to win the title – “Most Wanted Record Label of 2005” – is over. During three months this summer tens of thousands of unsigned artists answered the question “Which record label / A&R office would be your first choice to sign a record deal with?” via an Internet questionnaire.

Voters could choose one label each for six genres – pop, rock/metal, urban, electronica/dance, adult pop (MoR, Country, Jazz, Gospel, Classical) and alternative pop. The overall winner is Arista Records NY USA.

No.1 Record Label 2005 – Arista Records NY USA

No.1 on the Top 50 Label Vote 2005 is New York based Arista Records, who gathered 5.1% of the total votes. The label was founded by legendary A&R Clive Davis in 1975 and has recently featured artists such as Avril Lavigne, Pink, Outkast and Usher.

Ironically, during the summer’s voting process Arista ceased to exist and was incorporated with the label that is No.2 (4.27%) on the Top 50 – J Records NY USA, a label which was also founded by Davis.

Arista is also No.1 on both the Top 20 Urban Label Vote 2005 (with La Face) and the Top 20 Rock/Metal Label Vote 2005, while J Records is No.1 on the Top 20 Pop Label Vote 2005. So it is a grand slam for Davis and the Sony BMG group, to whom both labels belong to, and they certainly seem to have the confidence of the unsigned artist community.

Surprisingly, already at No.3 (3.73%) on the Top 50 Label Vote 2005 is the top non-American label – Island Records UK, home of U2, Keane and McFly. No.4 (3,65%) is Columbia/Sony NY USA and No.5 (3,24%) is Island/Def Jam NY USA. Island Records UK is also No.1 on the Top 20 Alternative Pop Label Vote 2005.

At No.7 (2,65%) overall is Blue Note Records NY USA (Norah Jones), who is also No.1 on the Top 20 Adult Pop Label Vote 2005 with the highest genre sovereignty of all – 17,65% of all voters in the Adult Pop genre chose Blue Note as first choice to sign a record deal with.

Even though electronica/dance is a genre mainly thought of as dominated by Europeans, the American label Tommy Boy Records NY USA snatched the No.1 spot on the Top 20 Electronica/Dance Label Vote 2005 just ahead of Island Records UK.

36 labels on the Top 50 are from the USA and 12 are from the UK. The most wanted German label, Urban Def Jam (0.59%) is at No.37, and the most wanted French label, Labels (0.47%) is at No.46. 8 of the 10 most popular labels reside in New York, USA.

Few independent labels made it high in the charts. Contrary to popular belief, it seems that most unsigned artists prefer cash as opposed to prioritized support.

A few successful labels that did not make it within the Top 100 include: DreamWorks, Elektra, Flawless, Sanctuary, Republic, Cash Money, East West, The Inc. and Ruff Ryder.
